In a world full of commercial, licensed toys, VOL * 1 aims to provide its consumer base with something out of the ordinary, connecting them to individual artists and work that stands out from the landscape of boring franchises.
This project involved the creation of a brand and its application to a physical product with packaging. I developed the concept with inspiration from art/design collectible series. "VOL * 1 Issue 1" represents a collection of products from the same series. The idea is that different artists and designers contribute to different issues rolled out by the company. I created a unique design intended to appeal to an audience that is interested in art and collectibles.
The artwork on the packaging reflects the nature of the brand, as the boxes line up to create a composition across the front and a repeating pattern across the top. The point of purchase display subtly reflects the imagery, creating a shroud of mystery established by the monotone color palette, ambiguous organic forms, and misty atmosphere.
The design reminds the viewer of traditional art and design, using brushstrokes and textures reflecting ink and paper on the packaging, as well as the use of traditional media in the creation of the product itself. The figurine are crafted out of clay and acrylic paint with organic lines and forms, giving the consumer a unique experience with each product.
I constructed the packaging my tweaking die lines to fit the dimensions of the product, applying artwork, printing, cutting, then assembling the boxes. I applied the branding to card inserts, where a pop of color emphasizes the uniqueness of each figurine. It indicates to the buyer how rare their figurine is and what else they could get if they continue to buy them.
